Vanilla Groove Eczema
in adults If you continue to experience psoriasis and eczema as you get older,
you will probably find that it affects the face, neck, upper chest,
front of the shoulders, areas where the skin creases and the backs
of the hands. Again the main symptom is severe itching and the
condition can be exacerbated by stress.
Eczema in children
Atopic psoriasis and eczema affects around 1 in 8 children and almost 30% of
all new-born babies carry the risk of developing the condition.
It usually starts in young babies who have dry, itchy, sore cheeks,
which they may try to relieve by rubbing on the pillow. The condition
progresses down the body, affecting the creases of the knees and
elbows if it's a mild case, or the whole body if severe. It also
often occurs on the scalp. Children with widespread psoriasis and eczema tend
to be very itchy and miserable, particularly if they're too warm
at night.
The good news is that about 75% of children grow
out of psoriasis and eczema before they reach their mid-teens. However, their
skin will always remain dry and prone to hand psoriasis and eczema so a good
skin care routine is necessary. A regime such as complete emollient
therapy can help.
The itch scratch cycle
Eczema is often accompanied by a severe itching. Scratching can
cause damage to the skin. This allows bacteria to penetrate the
skin and the body's immune system reacts causing inflammation
which in turn leads to further itching. Inflammation can result
in infection which once more can lead to itching. This itch-scratch-inflammation
cycle can be hard to break. Emollients with anti-itch ingredients
can help.
Dry skin is a very common skin problem. For some
people it may be a symptom of a hereditary or chronic dry skin
condition such as psoriasis and eczema, psoriasis or contact dermatitis. For
others, it is something that they suffer from at some point in
their lives. Different people suffer to a different degree, but
generally the same symptoms occur.
The symptoms of dry skin can be: a rough dry texture
which sometimes flakes and may cause itching
calloused skin
cracked and fissured skin
red, chapped and sore skin
rawness and tightness
Where dry skin is a symptom of psoriasis and eczema, it can often
be accompanied by a severe itching (pruritus). If scratched, this
can cause infection, which once more can lead to itching. This
itch-scratch-inflammation cycle can be hard to break but there
are emollients which can help. If the itch is the major symptom,
specially formulated emollients with anti-itch ingredients, should
be used. What causes contact dermatitis?
The only real difference between psoriasis and eczema and contact
dermatitis is the cause: Atopic psoriasis and eczema is caused by a number of
inherited and environmental factors. You'll find more information
in the psoriasis and eczema section.
Contact dermatitis is primarily caused when the skin comes into
contact with certain substances. These substances may be general
irritants (which can cause a reaction in anybody), or substances
which cause an allergic reaction in some individuals.
Patch testing is a diagnostic tool to differentiate
contact dermatitis from other skin disorders and identify the
relevant allergen.

You may be nervous about the widespread use of steroids,
particularly if you're a parent. However, these are important drugs
and when used carefully and sparingly, side effects are rare. If
you have any concerns, please talk to your doctor.

As every substance in the home, occupational or leisure environment
can be the source of a reaction, it is very important to provide
as much information about your daily routine and the kind of activities
you take part in when undergoing testing.
The patch test method simulates the irritative or
allergic reactions of the material on the skin. The test involves
a small amount of the potential allergens (manufactured commercially
or prepared by a clinical laboratory) being applied to the skin
in a test plaster. The plaster is ideally applied to the back and
remains on the skin between 24 and 48 hours.
After removal the patch test sites where a skin reaction
has occurred are documented. Irritant skin reactions are visible
straight away, while allergic reactions will occur 2 to 3 days later.
It is generally dermatologists or allergologists who
undertake patch testing.

How emollients work
Healthy skin needs water, natural moisturizing factors, lipids and
oils to keep it soft and supple. Skin which suffers from dryness,
psoriasis and eczema, dermatitis or psoriasis contains less of these substances.
By using an emollient the missing substances are restored and water
is trapped in the skin by creating a barrier on the skin's surface.
This prevents further water loss and stops any bacteria or irritants
from getting in, which can cause a flare up of the condition.
